Elderly Pakistani Man Stabbed To Death After Leaving Mosque In Birmingham
A 75-year-old man stabbed to death yards from his home may have been targeted in a racially motivated attack, according to police.
Mohammed Saleem, who used a walking stick, was stabbed three times in the back as he returned home from prayers at his local mosque in Small Heath, Birmingham, on Monday night.
The blows were struck with such violence they penetrated to the front of his body.
The father of seven also had no defensive wounds in what has been described as a swift, vicious and cowardly attack by the man leading the murder investigation, Detective Superintendent Mark Payne of West Midlands police.
Officers want to trace a white man, aged 25-32, of medium height and build, spotted on CCTV footage running near the scene of the attack around the time it happened, just before 10.30pm.
Police also want to trace a seven-seat people carrier captured on CCTV, driving near the mosque with the two male occupants, both white and in their 30s, who are considered “significant witnesses”.
In an emotional family appeal on Thursday, two of Saleem’s daughters, Shazia Khan, 45, and Nazia Maqsood, 44, called for the attackers to hand themselves in. They tearfully described their father as a “widely respected member of the community” and “much-loved”.

my heart breaks for him and his family

DUDE HE WAS 75 FUCKING YEARS OLD HOW MUCH OF A COWARD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO STAB SOMEONE WHO USES A GODDAMN WALKING STICK

In the back, no less. The poor man had no defensive wounds. He likely didn’t even see it coming.

this especially annoys me because one of the only reasons I continue watching the show as it devolves into a hot mess of violent misogyny, rampant racism, and fat-shaming nonsense is the costumes

and rolling some of those problems up into bad costuming decisions (more than once now, btw, though I suppose most folks don’t pay so much attention to the background ensembles or compare them from one city to another) is just. particularly annoying to me.

but seriously, you want to talk about how much better and more detailed the costumes are for westerosi folks vs essos folks? even for people who are supposed to be plainly dressed, like the night’s watch or stannis baratheon? or how much more distinct the ensembles are in, say, king’s landing versus the ensembles in qarth or astapor? bc if you think this is the first time a costuming decision has been racist, let me tell you ha! and also no.

and like i don’t see how anyone could say the casting hasn’t done some racist bullshit over and over and over again. like cutting out the fat heroic brown guy and playing up the old heroic white dude. replacing a canonically very dark-skinned major player in king’s landing with a white servant of a white dude.

with this decision, it’s all rolled up into one conveniently obnoxious package—to one of the characters I was looking forward to most.

If you’re going to argue a decision was made for totally non-racist reasons…maybe you should have a non-racist reason for the change.

If you take away “racism” as an explanation and the entire thing becomes non-sensical, guess what! The explanation is probably racism.

If I was into Game Of Thrones this would piss me off so much

People who complain about changes like this don’t understand the difference between visual and written media.

And apparently you don’t understand the difference between whitewashing and “the difference between visual and written media”

get a fucking clue.

It’s not whitewashing. Jesus, not everything is a conspiracy.

Read the written description slowly to yourself, now picture that character in the universe the producers have created. It’s ridiculous, it would not work.

Normal people have to enjoy this show if it’s going to succeed, and blue-bearded, gold moustached mercenaries are a bridge too far.

1) Who said anything about a conspiracy? I said it was whitewashing.

2) We’ve seen Tyroshi on the show already, and they’re not white. Tyroshi are not described as white in the novels. How would it not work?

3) Did you not see what Xaro was wearing? or Sallador? What do you imagine all the Braavosi will wear? (Which reminds me, have you met Syrio Forel? Because I strongly suggest you rewatch his scenes and look at his get up)

4) If your allegation is that people aren’t wearing flamboyant armor and conspicuous attire, I direct you to the entirety of the Lannister and Tyrell houses

5) Non-white people aren’t normal people? Or are you implying that people who read the books and would appreciate an even vaguely accurate casting choice be made are not normal?

6) And now, to address your most ludicrous point: DRAGONS ARE OKAY BUT A DYED BEARD IS TOO MUCH IS THIS YOUR CENTRAL ARGUMENT BECAUSE I AM ABOUT TO JUST START WEEPING WITH LAUGHTER

Also, if a blue beard is the hill the show’s producers are going to die on… there’s a lot of room to get closer to the original description while leaving that one specific detail out or changing it.

The consistent failure of the show’s otherwise impeccable costuming when it comes to non-Westerosi characters (ie, largely non-white and “exotic”), continual writing out of canonical POC characters to give to white OCs their roles, and downplaying of the POC characters that are left means that questioning this particular decision has a really good reason behind it.

Though tbh if this was the only change they had made and all that other racist, misogynistic bullshit wasn’t happening, I would still be annoyed about this particular change because changing the appearance of a character who cares a lot about said appearance and goes out of their way to present said appearance (you think dyeing your beard and moustache different bright colors doesn’t take some effort? you think matching the beard to the hair doesn’t take effort? how often do you think bright hair dye in our world needs maintenance? you think that’s easier in essos or westeros?) changes the character.

Changing the appearance of a character who cares a great deal about their appearance to something more or less inconspicuous in a crowd is a pretty big decision, costuming-wise, and completely changes the character.

The fact that this decision was made in a white-washed manner to give Dany a blandsome love interest, in a show already rife with whitewashing and blatant disrespect for anyone who isn’t a white dude or played by an actor the writers clearly have a thing for? Makes it so, so much worse.

It was a decision that altered a character for no apparent reason other than to cater to the racist kyriarchical notions the show goes out of its way to showcase (blandly handsome white guys brood at each other! conventionally pretty white ladies mope at each other! ambiguously brown actors play all characters of color!), and arguably made the story weaker.

When your racist bullshit gets in the way of good storytelling, arguing that it’s not really racist is kind of….pointless? Okay, so why’d they make this change? Explain this to me, because, as a costume designer who works on adaptations and is familiar with both the show and the book series, I really see no good reason, and honestly, no reason at all, besides the ongoing racist crap.

Gonna quickly throw in an epic quote I found on this article.

KJKJ: Gene Roddenberry, with balls of brass, got up on national tv and said, “hey people, if a geneticist took all the best DNA from planet Earth and put it together to make the best human the world has ever seen - he wouldn’t be a white guy.”

This is why I find the casting of a white actor in this role to be so repugnant. They are not whitewashing an Asian role, they are saying that the best genetic material that the entirety of this world and it’s diversity has to offer….still comes from a white guy.

Reblogging again for that

If you’re angrier about J.J. Abrams saying he didn’t like or understand Star Trek as a kid than you are about him casting the whitest of all possible white men to play an Indian character originally played a man of color, YOU ARE WRONG. I just cannot anymore with people.

(And this is not even addressing the absurd cultural deafness in casting a fucking Englishman as an Indian.)

i’m not angrier about it, but i’m fucking pissed about it. a series that had this much cultural impact on race and gender equality should not have been handed to someone who doesn’t understand and appreciate that fact. his not liking/understanding star trek pretty much explains how he’s oblivious enough to cast buntypunt fripplewitch as khan.

BASICALLY.

Like, TOS had some painfully basic attempts to address issues like race and gender equality and cultural tolerance. Really, really clunky stuff. But it was there from the beginning, you know? It was part of the entire purpose, and that purpose has remained through all iterations of Star Trek. Executed with varying levels of success, yes, but they kept trying because this is what they believed science fiction should do.

So to have Abrams say that Star Trek was “too intellectual” for him when it was easily comprehensible to the average 5-year-old suggests to me that he really just didn’t like being asked to contemplate social issues. It’s the kind of approach that leads directly to casting Fledermaus Trololo as Khan, because he didn’t want to think about — or was incapable of thinking about — why it might have been important that the ubermensch was brown.

It pisses me off because he basically came right out and said “I don’t care about why people liked Star Trek or what it stands for, I want more lens flares.” It confirms all my suspicions. And believe me, I was mad about Khan before — this just helps explain why he did it.

it may have been clunky but it was also MAJOR. the first interracial onscreen kiss was courtesy of TOS - and the network tried to stop it from being aired. forced them to film another take where the kiss didn’t happen. the shat intentionally flubbed the take so the kiss would HAVE to air.

and khan? KHAN? khan was the product of eugenics designed to create the perfect human being.

can we just look at that a few? THE GENETICALLY ENGINEERED PERFECT HUMAN BEING WAS NONWHITE.

if basic-ass shit like that is over your head, DON’T TRY TO FUCKING TOUCH IT.

also, jj, stop saying you’re trying to make sci fi for everyone. you’re not. you’re making it for yourself, and doing so via the erasure of the achievements of POC and women, something that the series you’re “improving” on strove to champion.

STOP IT.

That’s my favorite part. How he claims to be making it better and more accessible. Because he thinks more accessible means easier for douchewaffles like him to understand. And, dude, Star Trek often has been amazingly progressive — like the first on-screen kiss — but it’s doesn’t do it in an overly complicated way. I am SURE even you and your writers could comprehend it, if you were willing to look beyond your little world, all shiny and white with too much lens flare.

But here’s the thing. I bet a lot of people reblogging this are going to see it anyway. DON’T. If you don’t like the movie, if you think it’s offensive and derisive, please don’t go see it. Having a big opening weekend is only going to prove to JJ that he’s been right all along.

If there is any movie I recommend pirating instead of seeing in theaters, it is this one, for exactly these reasons. If you have to see it, don’t give them any goddamn money.

this is why i feel no fucking remorse for “ruining” people’s sci-fi by making it revolve around queer folks and people of color

like not only do they think it is okay to fuck us all around they have the audacity to act like we won’t notice?

fuck all y’all i’m never making any sci-fi that isn’t about queer ladies of color ever again

annie, i say this with all love and respect to you, cause i adore you into itty bitty pieces and i know your intentions here are very good.

however:

hey fellow white girl, step back and let WOC write for themselves.

i’m not saying never have anything but white peeps in your writing, cause that’s dumb. however, you’re not a WOC, you have never lived the experience of a WOC, and for you to write exclusively WOC is problematic as hell. POC and WOC have a hard enough time getting their own voices and experiences heard, it is decidedly not okay for Yet Another White Person to come in and write POC characters and narratives for them.

i’m sure your statement was mostly hyperbole and that you don’t intend to honestly never write another white character again, but take a second to see how what you said was incredibly problematic in and of itself. ::hug::

no, that’s totally true and I can definitely see how that reads problematically. However, a large factor in why I said it that way was that certain blogs run by poc (particularly damnlayoffthebleach) have impressed upon me the importance of writing people of color, knowing you’re going to fuck up, and accepting corrections.

like i’m not intending on writing stories ~about racism~ from the perspective of a woman of color, because, yeah, that’s totally not a thing I should do as a white person. but having people of color in your stories, even or especially when they’re not explicitly about race, is important, and it’s way easy to let the “i don’t know what i’m doing” ease a white writer into never including characters of color.

like obviously I don’t actually have the experience of people of color, and acting like I do would be beyond fucked up. But in a story that’s literally a science-fiction action movie that doesn’t address race or, really, any sociological issues, there’s not a good reason to not include or star women of color.

and like I appreciate the call-out and I know you probably don’t have the context of the many things I’ve read from bloggers of color talking about how it’s important to still write about people of color, but that was totally not the kind of story I was talking about writing, and I’m going to prioritize what folks of color have impressed upon me over a call-out from another white person.

(Aaaugh I hope I explained this well, I’m still so angry about this whole star trek thing that my brain is just sputtering and going in circles.)

Quote reblogged from to boldly nap with 5,989 notes

In the original Trek, Khan, with his brown skin, was an Übermensch, intellectually and physically perfect, possessed of such charisma and drive that despite his efforts to gain control of the Enterprise, Captain Kirk (and many of the other officers) felt admiration for him.

And that’s why the role has been taken away from actors of colour and given to a white man. Racebending.com has always pointed out that villains are generally played by people with darker skin, and that’s true … unless the villain is one with intelligence, depth, complexity. One who garners sympathy from the audience, or if not sympathy, then — as from Kirk — grudging admiration. What this new Trek movie tells us, what JJ Abrams is telling us, is that no brown-skinned man can accomplish all that. That only by having Khan played by a white actor can the audience engage with and feel for him, believe that he’s smart and capable and a match for our Enterprise crew.

Marissa Sammy on Star Trek: Into Whiteness.

perfect commentary which parallels what Rawles was saying earlier about the possibility of Moriarty being a person of color

  • “…The actual issue is that black people aren’t often allowed to play full and complete characters, and an antagonist who isn’t unintelligent, thuggish cannon fodder is just as much of a rarity for black men as the stubbly hero who saves the world or wtfever. “
  • “…The stereotype in no way intersects with brilliant geniuses who choose to step outside of the boundaries of society in order to exercise their intellect while having no concern for lesser beings.

Or to break it down further: the problematic stereotype regarding black people is that of being, in essence, subhuman. Characters of the Moriarty (and Holmes) archetype are rooted in being superhuman.”

You see? It’s more complicated than “people of color get typecast as villains.”

Black people get typecast as an extremely specific type of villain - they’re thugs, brutish and animalistic. South Asian actors are similarly typecast as scary oppressive (usually coded Muslim) terrorists.

But when your villain is of the superhuman archetype? When they’re brooding antiheroes, when they’re nuanced, when they’re multi-faceted?

They’re white.

(And check out this post on the glorification of white criminality in shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad, Weeds, Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, etc.)
